Wow, they did it again. Fall GuysMediatonic’s bubbly royal platformer, released yesterday on Xbox and Switch as part of a great free review. The game’s servers went down immediately, with reports of connectivity issues continuing more than 24 hours later.
First released for PlayStation and PC in August 2020, Fall Guys it was one of the defining games of the lockdown-era pandemic. You have to remember, life Really it sucked back then (okay, in terms of covid, it still sucks). For a moment, Fall Guys illuminated some dark times, its chaotic vibes and bite-sized 60-player minigames, not to mention a turn like PS Plus monthly “free” gameY a Twitch-based marketing campaign—helping propel him to massive popularity.
In March 2021, Epic Games acquired Mediatonic total. Part of that deal meant moving Fall Guys outside of the Steam store and on Epic’s proprietary game launcher. (Fall Guys it is no longer for sale on Steam.) But another part meant switching the game to a free model, taking an approach similar to rocket leaguewhose developer, Psyonix, was picked up by Epic in 2019.
That free launch happened yesterday, as part of Fall Guys‘s sixth season, aptly titled “Free For All”. Players immediately reported problems playing the game. Like the game’s social media sources who tried (and failed) to play, many of those reports I take the form of memes.
At 10:02 a.m. ET, the official Fall Guys Twitter account admitted problems, followed by a second reconnaissance 50 minutes later. He then returned to normal, tweeting about cakes, in-game cosmetics, and the disturbing fact that Fall GuysThe titular scapegoats are six feet tall. The official feed of the game has not said if Mediatonic considers the problem resolved or not.
The players sure don’t. on social networks, some say they have to spend long waits to enter a match, or have to constantly restart to play. Others say they can’t get into the games at all. Mediatonic has not provided a timeline for a fix. This, as with many online game releases, a disaster. The only difference between this and, say, escorts is that Fall Guys He’s been out for almost two years now.
When contacted for comment, Mediatonic representatives forwarded my box to epic. Epic representatives did not respond in time for publication. (Update, 2:15 p.m. ET: A Fall Guys The spokesperson said the game hit a concurrent player record yesterday, which put “a huge load on our servers and affected some of our matchmaking systems periodically throughout the day.” The spokesman said that “multiple fixes have already been successfully implemented to stabilize performance” and that “many people” have been able to play the game as a result, but declined to provide specific numbers).
This is not the only time Fall Guys has been hampered by serious server crashes. In 2020, Mediatonic racked up a ton of pre-release rumors by granting early access to Twitch streamers and their vast fan bases. When the game was released, 120,000 reported players tried to play at once. The servers sizzled. What does that say about time and flat circles?
